There are some Lodge meetings that remain in the memory long after the closing ode has been sung and the festive board has concluded. Our meeting on 22nd May 2026 was undoubtedly one of those occasions, and as I reflect upon the evening, I am reminded of just how privileged I feel to be a member of Royal Hanover Lodge No. 1777.
From the moment our candidate, Mr. Shivashankar Dhar, entered the Lodge, it was evident that he approached the ceremony with genuine sincerity and respect. Throughout the proceedings, he conducted himself with exemplary dignity, attentiveness and composure. What impressed me most was the care and concentration he devoted to every aspect of the ceremony. The lectures were clearly received with great interest, and his attentive demeanour demonstrated a deep appreciation for the traditions and values being shared with him. It is always encouraging to witness a candidate who fully embraces the experience, and Shivashankar did exactly that.

A special word of praise must be reserved for our Junior Deacon, Brother Alex Willoughby. His performance throughout the ceremony was outstanding. Every duty entrusted to him was carried out with confidence, precision and grace. The role of Junior Deacon can often be demanding, requiring constant attention and flawless execution, yet Alex discharged his responsibilities impeccably. His delivery was both impressive and assured, contributing significantly to the dignity and smooth running of the ceremony. It was a performance of which he can be justifiably proud.

The evening also reflected great credit upon our Worshipful Master, Worshipful Brother Matthew Jennings, together with his Wardens and Officers. The ceremony was conducted with warmth, authority and harmony, demonstrating the high standards for which Royal Hanover Lodge is well known. Their leadership created an atmosphere that was both welcoming and inspiring, ensuring that our candidate’s first experience of Freemasonry within the Lodge was one he will undoubtedly remember for many years to come.
Particularly noteworthy were the various lectures delivered by members of the Lodge. Each was presented with clarity, conviction and enthusiasm, highlighting not only the knowledge and dedication of the brethren but also the importance we place upon educating and nurturing new members. These contributions added greatly to the significance of the occasion and reinforced the timeless lessons at the heart of our Craft.
Before the Lodge was closed, a particularly fitting moment took place when our Worshipful Master, Worshipful Brother Matthew Jennings, formally welcomed our newly initiated brother into the Royal Hanover family. His words reflected the warmth, friendship and support that await every new member embarking upon their Masonic journey. Following this welcome, Worshipful Brother John E. C. Leggett presented the candidate with his starter pack, providing him with valuable guidance and resources to assist him in the early stages of his Masonic career. It was a thoughtful gesture and a tangible demonstration of the Lodge’s commitment to supporting its newest members.
Following the close of the Lodge, the brethren gathered for what can only be described as a joyful and convivial festive board. The warmth of fellowship was evident throughout the room as brethren enjoyed good company, lively conversation and shared laughter. Such occasions remind us that while our ceremonies are solemn and meaningful, the bonds of friendship that unite us are equally important.
One of the highlights of the evening came when our newly initiated brother responded on behalf of himself. His speech was delivered with sincerity, humility and genuine gratitude. His words were heartfelt and clearly reflected the impact the ceremony had made upon him. It was a thoughtful and confident response that was warmly received by all present.
As I left the Lodge that evening, I felt a renewed sense of pride in our fraternity. The attentiveness of our candidate, the excellence of our officers, the quality of the lectures, and the fellowship enjoyed at the festive board all combined to create an evening that showcased Freemasonry at its very best. It was a night of learning, friendship, and celebration—one that perfectly reflected the spirit of Royal Hanover Lodge No. 1777.
